1 Million Cribs Recalled

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall on September 21, 2007, of Simplicity manufactured cribs. The drop-side of the crib can detach and leave a gap, trapping and suffocating a child. There have been two deaths attributed to the problem and the CPSC is investigating a third death possibly related to the problem. The CPSC is also aware of 7 infant entrapments and 55 incidents in the cribs. Model names included in the recall are: Aspen 3 in 1, Aspen 4 in 1, Nursery-in-a-Box, Crib N Changer Combo, Chelsea and Pooh 4 in 1. The recall also includes Simplicity cribs branded as Graco-logo cribs: Aspen 3 in 1, Ultra 3 in 1, Ultra 4 in1, Ultra 5 in 1, Whitney and the Trio.

The recalled cribs have one of the following model numbers, which can be found on the envelope attached to the mattress support and on the label attached to the headboard: 4600, 4605, 4705, 5000, 8000, 8324, 8800, 8740, 8910, 8994, 8050, 8750, 8760, and 8996.

The CPSC has set up a web site dedicated to this recall with pictures and a video. You can get more information on the recall and information on how to contact Simplicity there.

Here are other crib safety tips:

  • Check to see if the crib has been recalled. Visit http://www.cpsc.gov/.
  • Make sure the mattress has no more than two finger-widths between the edge of the mattress and the crib side so that a baby can’t get trapped.
  • Make sure there are no missing, loose, broken or improperly installed screws, brackets or other hardware on the crib or mattress support.
  • Make sure this is no more than 2-3/8 inches (about the width of a soda can) between the crib slats so a baby’s body can’t fit through the slats.
  • Check that there are no loose, missing or cracked crib slats.
  • Make sure there are no corner posts over 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) high so a baby’s clothes can’t catch.
  • Check that there are no cutouts in the headboard or footboard so a baby’s head can’t get trapped.
  • There should be no pillows, comforter, soft bedding, pillow-like bumper pads or pillow-like stuffed toys in the crib in order to prevent suffocation.
  • Drop-side latches should not be easily releasable by the baby.
  • Only use crib-size sheets.
