Toy Safety
We shouldn’t focus on toy safety just around the holidays. Children receive toys as birthday presents, “just because” presents from grandparents, rewards for accomplishments, and at many other times throughout the year.
Many toys have been recalled in the past year for loose magnets or lead paint. Parents were left wondering which toys were safe and which weren’t and paid extra attention to toy safety.
What’s important? Remember, choking remains the main hazard with toys. Inspect toys carefully for small parts or parts that can break off easily. Look at the recommended age guidelines before purchasing toys. Manufacturers base these guidelines on the size of the parts in the toys as well as how they feel the toy will hold the child’s interest and meet his cognitive level.
You can find more safety tips on the Toy Safety handout and at the Safe Kids Worldwide Toy Safety web page.
